Least Important Things presents a special rewatch miniseries called Podcast: Impossible.
In this Mission Impossible podcast, Luke Ferris and Mike Wynne will accept the mission of watching every Mission: Impossible movie leading up to the seventh installment in the series.
Our task is to investigate the improbable influence of this franchise on culture, cinema, and Tom Cruise's legacy.
But before you listen to our Mission Impossible podcast to prepare for this summer’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. Let’s dive into some facts about the original that started it all.
Facts About Mission: Impossible (1997)
Mission: Impossible opened on Memorial Day Weekend, 1997. That weekend you could have seen movies like Twister, Flipper, or The Craft.
It would gross $75 million in its first six days, surpassing the previous record holder, Jurassic Park, and gross a total of $180M. If you adjust it for inflation, it is still the highest-grossing M: I film.
The film cost $64M to make and was shot in London at Pinewood Studios, Scotland, and on location in Prague.
And here’s the team:
It was directed by Brian De Palma, who directed Scarface, The Untouchables, Dressed to Kill, and Carrie. He is a member of the new Hollywood generation, which includes his buddies George Lucas Steven Spielberg, and Francis Ford Coppola. The movie was produced by Cruise/Wagner Productions, which of course, was helmed by Cruise and Paula Wagner. It was their first production.
Cinematography by Stephen H. Burum (Body Double, The Untouchables, Carlito’s Way)
Edited by Paul Hirsch (Carrie, Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Ferris Bueller's Day Off)
Music by Danny Elfman (Batman, Beetlejuice)
Written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Carlito’s Way), Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List, Clear and Present Danger), Robert Towne (Crimson Tide, The Firm, episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E.)
The film stars:
Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt

Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge
Jean Reno as Franz Krieger
Kristin Scott Thomas as Sarah Davies
